The Greatest Showman Movie Review for School Project

The Greatest Showman

The greatest show on Earth, yet it's never enough, Never! Never! ♪♫

Every human being with dreams always aims for success; we tend to sacrifice everything without becoming aware that a part of us has been taken away. However, most of us want to fit in for them to be accepted by society, and that actions have caused a lot more damage to their aspects of life. "The Greatest Showman" reminds us to dream, show benevolence and focus on what truly matters.

The musical film follows the story of Phineas Taylor Barnum, a 19th-century entertainer with a sense of fascination with his remarkable life, but at the expense of its intriguing real-life story. In the early 1800s, P.T. Barnum longed to be accepted by the preeminent crust of society as he was a son working with his tailor father, Philo. They both arrived at the home of Mr. Hallett and his daughter Charity Hallett; as they are working for them, young P.T. Barnum falls for Hallett's daughter and marries Charity after they were reunited as adults. Barnum marries Charity and lives a humble life with two beautiful daughters. Charity is contented, yet Barnum craves more success in life. After trying his hands at various jobs, Barnum turns to show business to indulge his limitless imagination, rising from nothing to create Barnum's American Museum, featuring various wax figures. However, ticket sales are slow, so his daughters, Caroline, and Helen suggest showcasing something "alive." The persevering family then adds unique performers called "freaks," featuring eye-catchy musical numbers, exotic performers, and daring acrobatics, such as the bearded lady and dwarf man. However, this garners excellent attendance, protests, and poor reviews from a well-known critic Gordon Bennett, soon naming it the Barnum & Bailey "Circus." Barnum partners his business with Philip, and with his partnership, soon adored by the world, as a famous singer Jenny Lind agrees to tour America with him as his manager. Barnum's sensational circus soon takes the world to become the greatest show on Earth.

Hugh Jackman plays the intriguing real-life story of Phineas Taylor Barnum with his strong will character that made the audience have high expectations towards the movie itself. Portraying the story of a historic showman is going to be met with high expectations. The same goes for her wife, Charity Barnum, which Michelle Williams played. She played the role very gracefully, with all the songs and dances together with his husband were flawlessly performed. Zac Efron played the role of Philip Carlyle, a fictional character, and Zendaya as Anne Wheeler. They were fantastic during their aerial stunts same goes with their vocals as they sang "Rewrite the Stars," and their chemistry was there. Rebecca Ferguson as Jenny Lind and Keala Settle as Lettie Luz (bearded woman) made me goosebumps every time they sang; hearing their voice was out of this world. Overall, the characters are so indefatigable and marvelous that it's impossible to hate. They successfully gave the audience shades of emotions that it is impossible not to get invested.

I appreciate the production, choreography, songwriters, and all the people who are behind the camera. However, the film bothers me for the reason that The Greatest Showman was whitewashed; it is historically inaccurate. The controversial success history of Barnum was that he grew rich by exploiting his era's culture of racial subjugation and enslavement for his personal gain. Despite its criticisms, the audiences embraced the film seeing that its displays a lighthearted expression of joy. Not to mention, The Greatest Showman soundtrack hit N0. 1 on the Billboard charts after four weeks and became the best-selling soundtrack for the year 2018.

As they have said, any art form always creates a critical message to communicate. The musical film positions itself as a story celebrating diversity, humanity, and the importance of embracing all kinds of every living thing from its shapes, sizes, and color as equals. It presents positive lessons without being controversial: don't judge people by their backgrounds; always follow your heart because it will lead to success. To quote Barnum's phrase, 'the noblest art is making people happy'.

The movie is rated PG, and it is not suitable for children under eight years old, knowing that there are some disturbing scenes wherein it shows sexual references, alcohol, drugs, and other substances, nudity, and sexual activity. Some intense moments and content could scare younger viewers. Parents must discuss the ethics of having animals perform in circuses and some non-intentional usage of terms such as calling the unique people' freak', but this is how some people use it.

The Greatest Showman is something I could watch repeatedly and never get tired of it. I give this movie from a scale-out of 1-5: 4.3/5

THE LETTER OF EMOTIONS

San Francisco helped Michael to show off who he really is. San Francisco is full of men and women, both straight and gay, who don't consider sexuality in measuring the worth of another human being. Michael sent a letter to his Mama to let her know that he's different, that he is gay. He no longer has to lie to his Mama yet with that letter, her mama knows him more and the people there taught him how to value truth.

I feel proud of Michael for not everyone can open up to their parents about what they feel and who truly they are. Michael got his courage to do what is right even though it took him time to cover himself to his Mama. I also felt bad for him knowing that he hid his sexuality from his mama for a long time. Michael pretended so that he can get out of his Mama's reaction. People who hid their homosexuality out of fear should put a stop to it knowing the fact that we can't get away with judgemental people. But actually, I can't blame Michael for not telling his sexuality easily to his mama, because we also have that in our minds that we need a perfect time and we need to get enough courage so that we can stand by our own feet and ignore what would be their reaction. We can also relate to other types of experiences or problems in our lives.

People who hide their true sexuality are quite common now. They do this because they are afraid of what would be the reaction of the people who surround them. They have witnessed how society could downgrade or belittle a person with different sexuality. Narrow-minded people forget that they are also human beings, that they have feelings, they have a mind, and as well as they have a heart. As I can see, having homosexuality may be really difficult because people have different mindsets and different beliefs. Mostly gay people had open up to their family yet they just get rejected and disowned. That's the reason why they are pretending from the outside even though they are not comfortable and true. They are not toxic instead those narrow-minded are the toxic ones, you don't have to hurt someone's feelings to make your opinion voiced out nor contented.

The LGBT community is getting larger and now I am also glad that the people are slowly accepting them and adapting to the changes that are currently happening. We must learn to love and accept them, after all, we live the same life, we breathe the same air, we die and have the same skeleton for sure. So better treat everyone fairly give them the amount of respect so that you can also earn one. No matter how wealthy and great you are how you treat people ultimately tells all. Even Pope Francis said that "God made you like this and he loves you" And with this, the LGBT Community feels welcomed and loved in the Catholic Church. Just like how the Pope did, we must also learn to accept how they feel.

"LOVE is LOVE" as you say this word it actually holds a lot of emotions. If you feel that your different, don't make it a hindrance to put an end to what you love. Fight for it. As long as you're not hurting someone nor violating things. Love is Free and love is Peace so keep your feet on the ground, but let your heart soar as high as it will. Don't be afraid to speak the truth because at the end it will always come out yet you do it before it afters you.

Family Day 2020

Family Day 2020 was the BEST knowing the fact that this is gonna be my last Family day here at ACT. For twelve years since nursery up until now, ACT gave me a home where in they teach children not just how to learn, read and write but also they taught me how to love, present and let your heart speak inside and outside the campus, and they also gave me good manners that I am bringing in a daily basis. Asian College of Technology value this event that even some family contributed personally to achieve it's goal in which every student's family will enjoy this gathering.

For the year 2020 the family day's theme was "tribal" as it strengthen traditions here at the Philippines and so that it will match Senior Santo Nino's celebration for Sinulog. Each level are assigned different tribal groups and booths were designed natively.

Colorful booths gave radiance to the place and people's faces. The activities were also fun and full of prizes. The school's tradition is having competitions through per level dance presentation, t-shirt design contest, booth contest and etc. Being a dancer since the dance competition was created, it was a whole lot of tirednes and fun because another memories will be kept. And yes, we still got the title as the champions for four years straight already.

After dinner, some families didn't went home yet for they've awaited the next activity "Raffles". Everyone was hoping that their name will be mentioned so that they can bring home one of the prizes. Basically I also got one, I brought five kilo of rice as I went home.

As a grade 10 student  a part of me felt something sad because I have already imagined what my grade 11 would be without my friends anymore. ACT gave me a home and a family. I will surely cherish those memories and share them to my future family.

by: Dave S. Deguinon

"WHAT YOU LEARN AT PLAY YOU'LL CARRY THEM THROUGH LIFE"
by Jeanille B. Cogtas

I strongly agree with this quote because you learn through your life experiences. A person literally starts gaining knowledge at the beginning of his/her childhood.

When we were young a playground seems to be a wonderful place for us to enjoy, you can run around, laugh out loud and make some friends. It surely does excites us. Not only when a child gets hurt or stumbles in the play, then the child starts to cry. With that situation, there are 3 ways a person or a child could possibly do. It is to "stand up, cure the wound and continue to play" or "stand up, cure the wound and lesson learned". Lastly, it is to "stand up, cure the wound, lesson learned and continue to play". You can choose one of those three solutions depending on what situation you're into.

My parents allowed me to experience new things that I, myself thought I couldn't do but being a newbie of that certain activity made a ladder for me to flourish and use that to improve or gain more knowledge and skills. Same also there at school, I tried new category of activities just like radio broadcasting, poster making and etc. but I lost at first but it's still a good start because when you win and felt easy doing it as first-timer you've never been challenged through failure and you can't actually realize what's the best way for you to improve.

As a kid you may think that a playground is only for playing but little did we know, we now realized that it gives us lessons. The playground serves as our training field for real-life happenings and problems. The best self-defense is our knowledge. What your experiencing right now will help you in the long run. Even the simplest work can make the difficult ones easy in the future.

One of the famous person we know which I can say that he can relate to this quote is Colonel Sanders, who owns the world's largest fast-food chicken chain, Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC). His life back then was gloomy. He lost his father at the age of 5 and he was responsible for feeding and taking care of his siblings. At age 17 he already lost four jobs and at the age of 18, he got married. but then his wife left him together with his daughter. At an early age, Colonel held down numerous jobs, including streetcar conductor, railroad fireman, insurance salesman, and farmer. He also joined the army but got washed away. He became a cook and a dishwasher in a small cafe. At the age of 40, he runs a service station at Kentucky, in fact, he also feeds hungry travelers. He retired at the age of 65 and got a cheque from the Govt. for $105. He felt that the govt. is saying that he couldn't provide for himself and Colonel felt giving up. He decided to commit suicide because he failed too much. He sat under a tree and wrote his will, but instead, he wrote what he would accomplished with his life. There was one thing he could do better than anyone than he knew and that was how to cook. So he bought and fried up some chicken using his own recipe and went door to door to sell them to his neighbors. He became a millionaire at the age of 85.

It made me realize that all the sufferings I'm encountering right now will help me in the future. I may think that it's not good for me anymore because it's draining or exhausting me out, but time will surely make me realize that I should trust the process and don't think that life is that hard. Because the more you think and complain, the more it gets harder until you can't move on. Your simple skills can help you as long as you have determination. What I also learned is that your life also depends on your attitude.

The Iliad and Odyssey; The bloodshed of Greeks and Trojans

The Chaotic Beauty

Helen of Sparta;
 Most beautiful woman
The Trojan war is a mythological battle. It was a battle between the people of Greece and the people of the city of troy. The gods and goddesses were always bickering. Hera, Athena, and Aphrodite wanted to know who was the fairest out of them. Prince Paris of Troy had been chosen to give the golden apple to the fairest goddess.
Aphrodite said to Paris to give her the golden apple. She said she would give him, Helen.  the most beautiful woman. Immediately Paris gave Aphrodite the golden apple and Aphrodite then kidnapped Helen.

Iliad

Achilles is exceptional he has everything you'd want to expect for a warrior. He is brave, loyal, strong, and confident. He is the son of the sea nymph Thetis and mortal named Peleus.

Achilles
The war began 10 years ago when Helen of Sparta was stolen away by the Trojan Prince Paris. Troy, besieged by King Agamemnon and his Greek army. The stubborn king offends the Greeks' best warrior, Achilles by claiming his spoil of war the maiden Briseis. Achilles leaves the battlefield, honor affronted. So Achilles' mother Thetis asks Zeus to let the Trojans have the upper hand to show the Greeks they need her son. There's a truce although Paris a lover, not a warrior is almost killed in a duel with Helen's husband. Heading into battle, Trojan champion Hector says an emotional goodbye to his wife and child. The fighting continued, spurred on by the Gods, and the Trojans are winning. Achilles still refuses to fight, but the Greeks know their rivals fear him. So his best friend Patroclus tries to fool the Trojans by wear Achilles' armor, yet he is killed in battle by Hector.  Achilles got furious and he vows revenge wearing his newly fashioned armor by Hephaestus, the blacksmith god. He then re-enters the battle and slays Hector. Still incensed Achilles defiles Hectors' corpse. This angers Zeus and he helps Hector's father Priam to find Achilles and beg for Hector's body. Priam reminds Achilles of his own father an the two weep together, mourning the vagaries of war. And the story ends with Hector's funeral and mourning at Troy

Odyssey

Odysseus
The Odyssey starts with a nymph, a King and the aftermath of war at Troy. It has been a decade since Odysseus left for his home Ithaca after the Trojan War. For 7 years he's been ensnared by the nymph Calypso, but he's pining for his wife Penelope and son Telemachus. The goddess Athena is rather a fan of Odysseus. She persuades her father Zeus to compel Calypso to free him.

He's been gone for 20 years feared dead and Penelope's fending off 108 suitors. She says she'll marry one when she finishes her weaving. Telemachus searches for new but, meanwhile, a higher power plots his father's downfall. The sea god Poseidon really dislikes Odysseus. And Odysseus is left stranded once more in Scheria.  But Odysseus entrances his host, the Phaeacians, with tales of his Odyssey and his many escapes from, the cyclops Polyphemus, the sorceress Circe, the sirens, the supernatural Scylla and the whirlpool of Charybdis. And the reward of his stirring story is going back home.
Penelope
As he went home,  Odysseus needs to stay incognito. Ever helpful, Athena turns him into a beggar and reunited with his son they celebrate by agreeing Penelope's suitors must die. The fair Penelope arranges a competition she'll marry whoever can string Odysseus's huge bow. The suitors lose more than a contest. Odysseus is home, and Ithaca is his again. Athena celebrates, Poseidon doesn't. Odysseus is in the clear and ready for life with Penelope

It was also mentioned that the Trojans had big walls protecting them from the Greeks. The Greeks then made a wooden horse and gave it to the Trojans. The Trojans took the horse inside their walls. They thought the horse was a surrender gift. But inside the horse were the Greeks. While the Trojans slept the Greeks came out and defeated the Trojans.

In life, you should be careful owing to the fact that there are a lot a trickster in this world. You may think that the person who's attached to you will always be there. You don't know that one day the person will use all your weaknesses. So better be an observant and always be courageous  even if you only got yourself
